Yorktown Memorial Hospital

In 1946, residents of Yorktown, TX, raised money to build a hospital and asked Feician Sisters to operate it. Yorktown Memorial Hospital opened in 1951, with nine sisters and Sister Mary Monica Peplinski as the first administrator. In the first year 850 patients were treated. In 1953, Yorktown Memorial Hospital was transferred to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Low occupancy, slow recovery of monies from insurance companies, and lack of medical staff support forced the sisters to close he hospital in 1986.

To support Yorktown Memorial Hospital, sisters held “parcel post” fundraisers. Packages were wrapped in plain paper, mailed by donors, and purchased by supporters for the surprise of revealing the contents.
