After 25 years as a teacher and librarian, Sister Mary Clarentine Dzienis became provincial superior of the Livonia province on April 3, 1977.
Moved by the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, Sister Clarentine took action to include the sisters in decision-making. She appointed a Board of Consultants, formed working committees, and began preparations for the first annual provincial assembly. Members met quarterly to discuss areas of concern and to create avenues for greater participation in community events.
Sisters in leadership of Felician-sponsored institutions were given significant latitude to make decisions regarding creative additions or modifications to their ministries. In this environment of trust and freedom, the province and ministries were rewarded with tremendous growth, especially St. Mary Hospital, Ladywood High School, Angela Hospice, and Madonna College.
Sister Clarentine spearheaded the construction of Angela Hall in 1980, a new wing for the sisters' care. She also approved building a new and expanded library for Madonna College, and a 20-bedroom extension of St. Mary Convent.
Sister Clarentine oversaw the opening of the Heritage Room, honored deceased sisters by restoring their gravesites in three cemeteries, and furnished Maryville Retreat Center and recreated facilities there.
By the end of her administration in 1982, the province had experienced a rebirth of Felician life, and Sister Clarentine went on to serve a term as councilor in the General Administration.
