On July 1, 1989, Sister Mary Celestine Giertych, a founding teacher at Holy Name of Mary High School in Mississauga and later its principal for 10 years, began her tenure as provincial minister of Holy Name of Mary Province.
Born in Warsaw before World War II, “Ania” and her family arrived in England via ship on May 12, 1946, the end of a long, tedious journey after being forced to leave their home in war-torn Poland. Ania entered the Felician Congregation because she found the sisters warm, happy, and cheerful. She said goodbye to her family and sailed to Canada to begin her life as Sister Mary Celestine Giertych.
A person of courage and faith, Sister Celestine brought vitality of spirit to whatever role she was engaged in – teacher, formator, leader. As provincial, she involved the sisters in decision-making regarding budgeting at the local and provincial level. She oversaw the renovation of the provincial house to provide a better living space, particularly for sick sisters.
A spiritual director and mentor, Sister Celestine as provincial minister continued the focus on spiritual development begun by previous leaders. Her efforts culminated in a three-week renewal program held in the summer of 1993 where sisters learned better communication skills, as well as a deepened knowledge of the Franciscan tradition. She also encouraged sisters to take advantage of sabbatical opportunities and to participate in Franciscan programs, including pilgrimages to Assisi.
Sister Celestine’s many gifts include artistic talent. Even at a young age she sketched and painted, developing her skills throughout the years.
