Sister Mary Alice Sobieraj was the founding administrator of McGuire Memorial in New Brighton, PA, a co-sponsored ministry of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Felician Sisters that was newly created in 1963 by the diocese.
Initially, the Felician Sisters served 150 infants and children up to age seven with physical and intellectual disabilities. Many would never be able to walk or talk, but each child was loved unconditionally.
Sister Mary Alice fiercely advocated for these infants and children to ensure each received the very best care and lived life to their fullest. She and eight other Felician Sisters lived in the facility with bedrooms that ringed the periphery so they could care for the children promptly throughout the night.
Sister Mary Alice’s 27 years of care for the vulnerable and voiceless were legendary.
