Elected Vice Provincial of Holy Name of Mary Vice Province in 1971, Sister Mary Alexandrette Smith was responsible for the spiritual welfare and religious formation of 64 sisters in final vows, 11 sisters in annual vows, and one postulant, before her term concluded in 1977.
Sister Alexandrette had served as a directress of novices, a teacher, and as principal. Her involvement in retreat work and spiritual direction shaped her leadership as she shared the contemplative tradition and prayer in numerous ways with her Felician community. She injected new energy into the spirituality of the sisters, encouraging participation in 30-day retreats.
Creative Community Living and Spiritual Discernment workshops conducted in 1973 were well attended by the sisters and opened channels for ongoing Felician formation.
Sister Alexandrette's visionary leadership extended to forging bonds within the community. She organized a Local Superiors Commission to resolve recurring problems in administration and apostolic service. She coordinated the celebration of the American Felician Centennial and preparation for Holy Year 1975, both as historic spiritual events and as stepping stones to genuine inner conversion. Finally, she arranged for weekends or days of prayer and reflection for special groups.
In 1999, Sister Alexandrette received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award for her great leadership in the Polish community of SS. Peter and Paul Parish.
