In 2002, three Felician Sisters responded to a plea for help from the Mooncrest Neighborhood Association, concerned about the decline of their neighborhood. Sister Mary Rene Procopio called it a leap of faith when she, Sister Mary Alexis Mikrut, and Sister Mary Leona Bzura responded with an array of programs for youth.
Sister Mary Rene Procopio, a founder of Mooncrest Neighborhood Programs, helps neighborhood children with homework. Providing structured after-school support was her first response to the neighborhood’s plea for help.
Sister Mary Clarence (Adeline) Borkoski engaged children at Mooncrest Neighborhood Program with Legos, games, and creating colorful art projects.
Pictured are the Mooncrest Neighborhood Program ministry and the Felician Sisters’ convent, located in the Mooncrest neighborhood they seek to help. The historic WWII-era housing development has a strong community focus. The sisters' after-school program has expanded into many vital programs that support struggling residents and have revitalized the area.
